The children in the summer program have been enjoying learning about marine mammals, including whales, dolphins, and manatees. Activities have included coloring and labeling a book of marine mammals, matching pictures of whales with cards that describe them, and even making origami whales. The children especially loved listening to a CD of whale sounds; a chart by the CD player showed a picture of each whale and the corresponding track number. We also explored how long whales are using a set of strings that were cut to the lengths of different types of whales. A picture of that whale was tied to the end of the string. We unwound the strings on the playground and got to experience the lengths of the whales. The blue whale, at 100 feet long, is almost as long as the entire playground!
